After our journey from Don Det, we made our way back to Pakse before catching a flight to Vientiane, and then onward to Bangkok, where I settled in for a months-long stay.

During my time in this bustling metropolis, I discovered that there are three distinct ways to experience what is arguably the most vibrant and dynamic city on earth.

The first way to immerse yourself in Bangkok is through its posh, elegant, and lavish venues. This is the realm of high-end clubs and restaurants, where luxury knows no bounds. The city is home to numerous 5-star hotels and upscale condo rentals, offering rooftop vantage points, exclusive clubs, indulgent spas, and high-end shopping experiences. This is how the Thai elite and wealthy visitors choose to spend their time in Bangkok. For transportation, they rely on private cars, VIP vans, and limo services to navigate the city in comfort and style.

The second way to enjoy Bangkok is the way I assume most visitors experience the city. It involves staying in comfortable, yet affordable, hotels while keeping an eye on your budget. Bangkok offers countless “normal” restaurants, several popular shopping malls, and a variety of shopping venues. The city is also rich in temples and tourist sites that are well worth visiting. There’s no right or wrong way to experience a city like Bangkok, and this approach allows for a balanced mix of culture and comfort. Transportation options for this group include taxis, the BTS Skytrain, the underground MRT metro trains, and shared water taxis.

The Sky Walk is a popular tourist attraction.

The third way to experience Bangkok is from the ground—or street level. This is the most immersive and authentic way to see the city, where walking or hopping on a tuk-tuk or motorbike taxi becomes your primary means of transportation. You’ll savor the delicious street food from the many food stalls and night markets, and you’ll find yourself walking the bustling streets of Sukhumvit and Khao San Road, brushing against the wave of humanity and street vendors selling everything imaginable.

I’ve had the privilege of experiencing all three of these different sides of Bangkok, each offering its own unique perspective on this incredible city. Come to Thailand and discover your unique way of visiting the incredible city of Bangkok!
