After spending some time in the United States, I embarked on a return journey to Europe. Upon landing in Ramstein, Germany, I crossed paths with Idalia, who extended a warm invitation to a German birthday party and grill-out. The idea of embracing the local culture intrigued me, and I eagerly accepted. As we bonded over shared experiences and delicious food, Idalia mentioned her upcoming trip to the Netherlands with a small group of friends to visit Keukenhof—a magnificent park spanning 80 acres, adorned with over 7 million flowers. Intrigued by the prospect, she invited me, and I agreed to meet them in the picturesque town of Lisse in a few days’ time.
Before making my way to Lisse, I embarked on a train journey from Germany to The Hague, a renowned city in the Netherlands. As I walked towards my hotel, an encounter caught me by surprise—a University of Virginia graduate, hailing from just one hour from my hometown. It was an extraordinary coincidence to meet someone with a connection to my small town roots in such a far-flung place.
During my time in The Hague, I immersed myself in the city’s captivating atmosphere. The International Criminal Court and the International Court of Justice added an air of global significance to the southern Holland city, while the traditional canals and abundance of bicycles retained a charming Dutch touch. As I wandered through the city, I passed by landmarks like the International Peace Palace and the residences of Dutch royalty, each contributing to The Hague’s allure.
From The Hague, I traveled to Lisse, where I rendezvoused with Idalia and her friends as we explored the quaint town before attending the world renowned Keukenhof flower show. Stepping into the park, I found myself immersed in a world of vibrant colors and intoxicating fragrances. Acres of blooming tulips, lilies, orchids, daffodils, and hyacinths unfolded before my eyes, leaving me in awe of nature’s artistry. The Keukenhof was an exquisite display of floral beauty, captivating all my senses and inspiring a profound appreciation for the wonders of nature.
If you have a love for flowers, especially tulips, a visit to Holland in the spring is an absolute must. The Keukenhof flower park offers a feast for the eyes and a symphony of scents, showcasing the resplendent beauty of nature.
