In the crisp winter of January 2015, I decided it was time to embark on an adventure unlike any I had experienced before. After finalizing the sale of my house and settling my mother’s estate, I mustered the courage to embark on my first-ever solo vacation. With a mix of excitement and trepidation, I set my sights on the Dominican Republic, a tropical paradise, but not before making a pit stop in the captivating land of Iceland.
As I boarded the red-eye flight, my mind brimmed with anticipation and wonder. The journey was a whirlwind, with a long layover in Iceland that allowed me to catch a glimpse of its breathtaking landscapes. Finally, at the break of dawn, I touched down in the Dominican Republic, my heart aflutter with the promise of new experiences.
My home for the week would be the Crown Plaza in Santo Domingo, a haven of relaxation with its inviting outdoor pool and lively bar. However, upon arrival, weariness washed over me, a reminder of the long journey. The reception clerk kindly informed me that my room would not be available until 4PM. Fatigue tugged at my senses, urging me to find respite, even if temporary. In a fortunate turn of events, the clerk offered me a temporary room for fifty dollars, with the caveat that I return at noon to check if my designated room was ready. Eager for rest, I gratefully accepted the offer.
Ascending to the top floor of the hotel, I exited the elevator and then had to climb up a private staircase, to a suite that would serve as my sanctuary until noon. Although exhaustion slightly clouded my perception, I couldn’t help but notice the spaciousness and comfort that enveloped me. The suite boasted a living room, kitchen, and a separate bedroom, along with awe-inspiring views overlooking the ocean. Fatigue finally claimed me and I sank into the embrace of slumber.
At noon, as promised, I made my way back to the front desk, ready to exchange the suite key for my designated room. To my surprise, a different clerk greeted me, and after a quick glance at her screen, she divulged an intriguing proposition. The suite I had occupied had no reservations for the week, and she proposed that I continue staying there for no additional charge, if I promised not to disclose the information. Overwhelmed by the unexpected stroke of luck, I eagerly accepted her offer, embracing the comfort and luxury of the suite for the entirety of my stay.
During my time at the hotel, fate brought me into the company of two vibrant guys from Sweden, also seeking respite from their daily lives. We bonded over shared experiences, embarked on a few exciting adventures, and indulged in delectable meals together, forming a connection that transcended borders and cultures as we explored the local attractions.
As my unforgettable week drew to a close, we bid each other farewell, promising to keep in touch. The Swedes extended a heartfelt invitation to visit them in their homeland, an offer that stirred that sense of wanderlust within me, igniting the desire to continue exploring the world and forging connections across continents; and an offer which I would take them on up on, as you can read about in my later posts about travelling through Sweden.
In retrospect, that solo vacation marked a pivotal moment in my life. It was a testament to the strength and resilience that reside within us, even when faced with profound loss and uncertainty. The trip taught me the importance of embracing new experiences, of stepping outside my comfort zone, and the power of serendipitous encounters that can shape our journeys in unimaginable ways.
As I ventured back home, the memories of that incredible week lingered, reminding me of the boundless possibilities that await when we dare to venture into the unknown. With newfound courage and a thirst for adventure, I knew that this trip was just the beginning.
The Journey Begins:
Over the next several months, a plan began to formulate. Months of contemplation and planning had led me to a pivotal decision – I was going to quit my job and embark on a life-changing journey. The idea of traveling the world had become a burning desire within me, and I was determined to make it a reality. With a heart full of anticipation, I began the process of letting go of my possessions, selling what I could and carefully storing the rest. The weight of my responsibilities dwindled as I packed my life into a single backpack, ready to embrace the unknown.
Ensuring all necessary preparations were in place, I obtained the required immunizations and meticulously organized my travel documents. To ensure a smooth transition, I made arrangements for mail forwarding, bill management, and emergencies back home. Before setting off on my grand adventure, I took the opportunity to visit friends and relatives along the East Coast, creating cherished memories and bidding farewell to loved ones.
Having served in the military for an extended period, I was granted the privilege of flying for free whenever space was available. Excitedly, I sought out flights to embark on my journey. My first attempt led me to the air base in Norfolk, Virginia, with the hope of catching a flight to Southern Spain. However, the odds were not in my favor as the limited number of seats available left me unsuccessful in securing a spot. Undeterred, I persisted, hoping for a different outcome the next day when attempting to board a flight to Sicily. Once again, the limited number of seats proved to be a challenge, and I found myself among the hopefuls left behind.
Undeterred by the setbacks, I drove to Dover, Delaware, determined to try my luck at the air base there. A flight to Spain was scheduled for the following day, and I eagerly awaited my opportunity to board. However, fate had other plans as the presence of explosives and sensitive equipment on the flight led to the decision of not taking any passengers. The journey was testing my resolve, but I remained steadfast in my determination to embark on this adventure.
With a glimmer of hope, I pressed on and made my way to the Dover air base once again. This time, my perseverance paid off. A flight to Germany was announced, and I patiently waited for my chance to secure a seat. As luck would have it, I was the final name called – the 73rd person to claim a spot on the flight which would carry exactly 73 passengers. My spirits soared as I realized I was finally on my way. Climbing aboard the immense C-5 cargo plane, I nestled into my seat, put in my earplugs, and fell asleep.
As the plane soared through the skies, I couldn’t help but feel a sense of liberation wash over me. The setbacks and challenges had only fueled my determination, and now I was on a path that promised endless possibilities. Little did I know that this journey would shape my perspective, push me beyond my limits, and unlock a world of discovery.
With each passing mile, I felt the weight of the world lift from my shoulders, replaced by the exhilaration of embarking on the adventure of a lifetime. The thrill of the unknown beckoned, and I eagerly awaited the wonders that awaited me in the vast expanse of this beautiful world. As I drifted into a peaceful slumber on that colossal cargo plane, I knew that my journey had only just begun, and the experiences that lay ahead would forever transform me. The world was calling, and it was time to answer.
