After our enchanting day on the Isle of Capri, we continued our stay in the laid-back coastal town of Sorrento. This charming city, always warm and inviting, beckoned us to explore its captivating streets. Sorrento is renowned for offering some of the world’s finest wines at remarkably affordable prices. We couldn’t resist indulging in the local olives, straight from the trees and bursting with flavor. Freshness is key here—nothing canned or preserved. Perched on cliffs, the city offers breathtaking views from its edges, and the sight of scooters buzzing around added to the cool atmosphere. Coffee bars and outdoor seating spots adorn every corner, accompanied by the enticing aromas of fresh seafood and authentic Italian cuisine. Lemon groves dot the landscape, and the locals utilize this citrus bounty to create various lemon-infused products, including soaps, candies, and the famed Limoncello liqueur. Many local restaurants gratuitously provide Limoncello as an aperitif before or after a meal.
Our time in Sorrento allowed us to savor some of the finest Italian cuisine…
Leaving Sorrento behind, we embarked on a hydrofoil journey along the picturesque coastline until we reached the bustling port of Naples. After a bit of searching, we finally found our hotel and wasted no time in seeking out the renowned L’ Antica Pizzeria da Michele. Made famous by Julia Roberts in the movie “Eat, Pray, Love,” this eatery is hailed as the birthplace of pizza. The wait is always substantial, ranging from 30 to 60 minutes, but the limited menu and outstanding quality make it a worthwhile experience. With our appetites satisfied, we strolled through the ancient streets of Napoli, witnessing a mesmerizing sunset from the rooftop patio of our hotel.
The following morning, my sister bid farewell as she returned to the States, ending our wonderful visit together, while I headed back to Rome to embark on a twelve-day cruise aboard the Celebrity Constellation. The ships first port of call was none other than Naples itself. Onboard, I met a fellow traveler named Ashley from the United States and decided to show her the wonders of Naples, retracing the boat trip I had taken just days before from Napoli to Sorrento. It was my fifth visit to Naples and fourth visit to Sorrento. In Sorrento, I have a go-to spot, and this time was no exception. Settling into an outdoor chair at my favorite place to sit and watch the world go by…The Fuano Bar. I connected to Wi-Fi and directed my friend toward the bustling shopping district. Hours flew by as I basked in the sun, indulged in delicious food, and absorbed the warm Italian culture. We regrouped and cruised back up the coast, returning to the docked cruise ship in the port of Naples. After over a month on the road, and living out of my backpack, I was grateful for the chance to relax in the same room for the next several days.
Sorrento and Naples offered us an exquisite taste of Italian delights. From the laid-back charm of Sorrento to the vibrant streets of Naples, every moment was filled with culinary wonders, breathtaking views, and the warm embrace of Italian hospitality. If you find yourself in Southern Italy, don’t miss the opportunity to explore these coastal gems and immerse yourself in their captivating atmosphere.
